iPhone HDR Sample Photos – iOS 4.1 – Part One
Today Apple released the 4.1 version of the iPhone software which has built-in HDR capability added to the camera. Having used a couple different iPhone apps that create HDR images I was anxious to try out Apple’s HDR function. Below are some sample images taken from my condo balcony as well as the roof of my condo building in Minneapolis tonight – a before and after sample image – one taken with HDR turned off and one taken with HDR turned on.
One of the images was after the sun set which produced some very decent results although a bit more grainy which is to be expected given the low light. All images were exported from the iPhone and resized and slightly sharpened – no other re-touching was done to the images.
These first two images were taken at sunrise on September 9, 2010 – all the others were taken the prior evening. The results are really dependent on where you tap on the screen to select the focus and exposure. To see PART 2 of this posting – click here.

Overall this new feature produced some very nice results – not the super exaggerated HDR type images that the iphone apps I have produce – these are very useable nice images. Of course the results you get are a bit dependent on where you select the focus point to be.
