After receiving my new iPhone 4S yesterday I was curious to see how much of a different there was between the iPhone 4 camera and the iPhone 4S camera after Apple said they made some big improvements to the camera – clearly those changes are not limited to the megapixels only.  Below are a some sample images I took this morning.  I’ve done nothing to these images but email them to myself and resize them to 1015 pixels wide.  While I use to love my iPhone 4 camera – the new iPhone 4S makes me realize how much more there is to love!

The first two photos below were taken at the same time, right after another in a parking lot before sunrise.  The iPhone 4 photo clearly is more grainy, and the blue sky looks really blue.  The iPhone 4S photo is not nearly as grainy but has much warmer color to it – the sky also looks more naturally blue.

These next two photos of a house in my neighborhood were taken in the morning – very contrasty image – areas of darkness with the bushes, and very bright sky.  The first image of the iPhone 4S look very nice, however the iPhone 4 has a blueish hue to it, the trees are just blown out and over-exposed.  The iPhone 4S clearly is the winner in this shot.

The next two photo below were taken inside the Dunn Bros. coffee shop.  The sky was just getting a little lighter – this was taken about 7:05 a.m.   As in the first image, the iPhone 4S does not look as grainy as the iPhone 4 image. There is clearly a color difference – the iPhone 4S again looks warmer

These next two images are sample HDR images – some pretty dramatic difference here – they speak for themselves.

The two images below were taken in Loring Park around 7:30 a.m. – the iPhone 4S sample has more even lighting and the colors look nicer in my opinion.

Another view of the park shown below – again the iPhone 4S does a superior job of having even lighting, more natural colors and looks more focused.

A couple more HDR comparisons below – a underground parking ramp in downtown Minneapolis – not the best lighting for sure in this underground ramp.  The new iPhone 4S seems to really take the graininess that is normal in a low light photo and really smooth it out.
